Thorns
Visual Development
What follows are multiple tree design style explorations for senior film Thorns, using a mix of watercolor and cloud brushes. These explorations were for the purpose of pin pointing what style we wanted for the trees in the layouts. Trees on the right are quick concept sketches while the trees on the left are finalized styles for the film. All trees were made in Adobe Photoshop, using primarily watercolor brushes and smudge brushes.
After settling on a tree design for the main tree of the film, I went into photoshop and explored different colored lighting for different settings and moods throughout the film. We as a crew settled on three different lighting settings, pink for twilight, purple for danger, and blue for moonlight.
Here are three iterations of art styles for the film, with the third image being the one we ultimately went with for the film.
Below are two different angles of what how the overall layout of our story's setting is mapped out. Featuring five main location trees, in order to keep track of where are character is located throughout the film to reduce continuity errors.
Here are some early iterations of two layouts that did end up in the film. The top one was made with watercolor pencils, and the bottom one is a digital painting but made to look like it was made with watercolors.
